1. What is toprope climbing?

Toprope climbing (or top roping) is a style in climbing where the climber is securely attached to a rope which then goes up, through an anchor system at the top of the climb, and down to a belayer at the foot of the climb. The belayer takes in the slack rope when you’re climbing so that if at any point the climber were to lose their hold, they would not fall more than a short distance. When the climber reaches the top, the belayer lets the climber down.

Getting your Indoor Toprope certificate is the first step in your climbing ‘career’. In this course, you learn basic skills you’ll need to safely climb and belay. Things discussed are: awareness of risks, belaying with different belaying devices, tying knots, falling exercise, techniques and more.

After successfully finishing the course, you’ll receive an NKBV indoor toprope certificate. You can climb in all climbing gyms in the Netherlands when showing this certificate.

2. When does the Indoor Toprope Course take place?

The Indoor Toprope course is organized by the Tilburg University Sports Center every month. The full course consists of four classes of 2 hours. The last class is the exam. In order to take the exam and get your certificate, you need to attend every class. On the website of the Sports Centre you can see the next oppertunity to take this course.

3. Where does the course take place?

The address of the Tilburg University Sports Center is: Academielaan 5, 5037 DA Tilburg. The course is held in Sports Hall 2B.

4. What are the expenses?

The Toprope course is free if you have a membership at the Sports Center. The only additional costs are the NKBV Indoor Toprope card. With this card, you can prove you can climb independently. It costs €5,00.

5. How do I sign up?

Go to the website of the Sports Center. Log in and go to ‘Shop’. On the left side of the page you’ll see ‘courses’. Here you can add the climbing course, if it is not yet full you can register!

6. What do I need to bring?

Bring sports clothing in which you can move freely. There is an opportunity to borrow climbing shoes at the course, but bring extra shoes to be sure, because we can’t guarantee they have your size. Don’t forget to tie up your hair if it is long. If you have long nails, be sure to clip them so they don’t break while climbing.

7. I got my certificate, what happens now?

When you have completed the course, you can join the training at the Sports Center on Wednesday evening. Climbers of different levels train here.
